Elmley Castle
Anglican: St Mary
St Mary’s dates back to Norman times, and there is evidence of pre 1100 herringbone masonry in the chancel. There is much work from later periods and the church was restored twice in the 19th century. The north transept houses two fine 17th century monuments, one to William Savage and the other to Thomas, first Earl of Coventry. A Grade I listed building it features in Simon Jenkins’ 1000 Best English Churches and Betjeman’s Best British Churches (2011). The church is usually open during daylight hours.
