The combination of a radical plan to rebuild the centre of Redditch, and the deterioration of a number of church buildings in the town, led to the establishment of an imaginative new Ecumenical Centre in the late 1970’s. The Centre is on the second floor overlooking the main pedestrian area of the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.
The Congregational church [after joining with the Presbyterians and now known as the URC] stood in the way of town centre redevelopment, and with the sale of their site to Redditch Development Corporation, the church determined to remain a presence in the town centre. They invested their capital in a new Ecumenical centre, which would provide both worshipping space and premises for a large number of voluntary groups. Joined by the Methodists from Bates Hill, the Centre became known as Trinity Church and opened in 1978, one of the first of such schemes in the country. In 1999 the Methodists from Alcester (Ipsley) Street voted to close their church and join Trinity Church. Located above the shops in the Town Centre, it is a light and welcoming worshipping place, now known as Emmanuel Church in the Ecumenical Centre.
